The artist was an Imperial princess, a nun, and an accomplished painter. She was the eighth daughter of Emperor Gomizunoo and a disciple of Ryōkei Shozen, whose calligraphy is also in the exhibition. Gen’yo made numerous paintings of Avalokiteśvara as part of her religious practice.
